Sad news from Campus

January 15, 2009 By: Tim Glas Category: Campus News

For any of you who may not have heard from the Alumni Association:

This message is being sent to you because of your affiliation with the The Citadel Alumni Association On-Line Community at URL http://www.alumniconnections.com/olc/pub/CDL

No duty is more difficult for me than to inform The Citadel community of the passing of a cadet. Yesterday, Cadet Adam K. Riley died in Watts Barracks. Adam was a junior from Centerville, Massachusetts.

This tragedy touches the entire Citadel community. COL Greg Stone, Commandant, assembled each of the battalions in their barracks last night and informed them of Adam’s passing. COL David Golden, Chaplain to the Corps of Cadets, and Dr. Suzanne Bufano, our Counseling Center Director, were also there to let all cadets know that support and counseling is available for any who seek it. Cadet leadership, including the human affairs and religious officers, have also been directed to observe cadets and encourage them to seek support.

I know parents are concerned for their cadets and how The Citadel can help. The best place to start if you have any concerns is to contact your cadet’s tactical officer. A list of the tacs can be found on our website.

You are also welcome to contact the campus Counseling Center. The phone number is 843-953-6799 and can be found on our website. Chaplain David Golden is also available to speak with families. He can be reached at 843-953-5049.

I ask members of The Citadel family to keep Adam and his family in their thoughts and prayers.

Got Homecoming Pics?

November 20, 2008 By: Tim Glas Category: Class News, Homecoming 2008

Hey all.  My wife & I are back from Charleston after a great weekend.

So we were a bit preoccupied (she’s expecting our first within the next few weeks to a month) and did not take many photos, but we did take some. We’d like to see more pictures from the weekend.  We’d also like to publish ours for any class members who were only able to join us in spirit.  I’d like to ask folks to post the photos they took so that everyone in the class can get to them.  For that reason, I put together a quick Flickr group for the class.

If you get the chance, join the group (http://www.flickr.com/groups/citadel93)and upload your photos. It’s free, easy to do, and if you already have a Yahoo! account you don’t even need a new account.  Just tag all of your photos as “Homecoming 2008″ so that we can group them together.

Cheers,

Tim

From Ray Moore: Brigadier Foundation Golf Tournament

August 12, 2008 By: ClassBlogAdmin Category: Brigadier Foundation, Honor Roll

Gentlemen:

Our honorary classmate and esteemed former Assistant Commandant in charge of Discipline called me yesterday to let me know we were the “only one” of his classes that has not agreed to sponsor a hole in the upcoming Brigadier Foundation Golf Tournament.

Since we made him an honorary member of our class, I was somewhat embarrassed, but relieved that we can cure this easily enough.

Because time is short, I intend to write a check for $1,000 to sponsor a hole for the class of 1993.  At Colonel Dick’s suggestion, the banner will read:

The Citadel Class of 1993
In Memory of Captain Christopher Kenny, KIA Iraq
Remembered by his Classmates

You may recall Colonel Dick graciously parted with the ‘93 ring we had presented him so that Chris could be buried with our class ring.

If would like to contribute to this sponsorship, please send me a check at the address below in whatever amount you can contribute.   I will email everyone when I get to $1,000 and I will turn over any extra I get to those coordinating Homecoming activities.

Thanks and GO DOGS!!!

Ray

PS: I am sure Col. Dick would love to hear from you; his email address is listed.

Chris Kenny Memorial Service on 13 NOV

July 11, 2008 By: ClassBlogAdmin Category: Honor Roll, Homecoming 2008

I also want everybody to be aware of the Chris Kenney memorial service on Thursday afternoon.  Jim Boyd and I made a strong push for the service to be held on our reunion weekend so that as many classmates as possible could attend.  Chris’s parents will also be in attendance and I am sure it would mean a lot to them for our class to have a strong showing.  Chris made the ultimate sacrifice for us and our country and I believe we should all attend his memorial if possible.  The memorial service is scheduled for 4:30 PM on Thursday, November 13.  I will relay more details as I have them.  I have also added a few more emails to the list.

Take Care,
Palmer

A Message From Ernie Yarborough

July 11, 2008 By: ClassBlogAdmin Category: Homecoming 2008

Fellow members of the class of ‘93
I wanted to get this info out to everyone that I can.  Feel free to forward on to other classmates.  I recently obtained more e-mail address so I am sending out this summary of some recent e-mails regarding homecoming.  I have weeded out most of the junk and have included the three important emails starting with my original e-mail.  Start at the bottom, number 1, and read up and it will all make sense.

Short Summary:
Homecoming November 15th
Stay at the Hampton Inn (Historic District)
Phone number:  843-723-4000.
Tell them Class of 1993 so that they will credit our reserved book of rooms.

More details to follow should come from Vipperman in the near future.

Take care everyone !

Ernie Yarborough ‘93

NUMBER 3

Ernie
I’ve just booked an additional 25 room at $239.  The contract will be signed today so wait until tonight or tomorrow morning to call in your reservation.  Make sure you tell them you are with the Class of ’93 and I am the contact.  I want us to use those blocked rooms up first.  If we don’t use them, I get stuck with the bill.

Rob

NUMBER 2

Ernie,

Vip asked me to block come rooms at the Hampton several months ago and all they could give us is 20.  I’ll call back and see if we can increase the number.  Vip has committed us to the Friday night party hoseted by the “Stray Dog Society” at the visitors center bus shed.  There will be a band, food and of course drinks.  I’m not sure if he has nailed down the cost yet but I think it is somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 per person for Friday night.  I think Vip is trying to get together stuff for the game now but regardless, we will have a catered event under the tent at the game.

I’m going to ask Vip to really play up the Citadel Club of Charleston’s golf tourney on Friday.  It’s usually in the neighborhood of about $85 per person and includes alcohol plus a catered lunch.  Nixon and I did it last year when it was held at Charleston National and had a great time.

I’ll get more to you as it becomes available.

Rob

From

Ernie Yarborough/SC07673/NWAGENT

Good Evening Fellow ‘93 grads.
A lot of questions have been going around about our 15th reunion.  Where is it going to be?  Is there a band?  Where should we stay?  Will Dean Best get drunk?  Will Paul Magistro smoke his cigars?  Will Jimmy Kinard get naked?

The rumors are about the Party.  Friday night? Saturday night? I don’t know.  But the rumor is that it is going to be at the Visitors Center and the Hampton Inn is right there.  (This is where we had our 10-year party which was great).  Jason Cline and I have been talking so he called the Hampton Inn and someone has reserved a block of rooms for the class of 1993 at The Hampton Inn.  So that tells me that something is going on.

So I called the Hampton Inn and spoke to Nicole.  She said that there were 20 rooms blocked off and that there are 4 left.  There again that tells me that something is going on.  So I got one, so that leaves 3.  Jason Cline called and got one so that leaves 2.  But don’t be alarmed.  There are still rooms available there for that weekend.  The lady said that there are still about 35 rooms available for that weekend.  For now…

Now if it turns out that this is not the right place to stay then I will just call and cancel my reservation with no problem.  There is a 48hr cancelation policy.

I recommend calling and reserving a room.  I’m staying Thurs night, Fri night and Sat night.
The rate is $239 for Sat. $239 for Fri and $159 for Thurs.  Some people may get military discount, Gov discount….
Average Hotel Rates in Charleston probably run from $189 to $389.

Please forward this to any classmates that you can think of.  And if you know any info about the weekend that I do not know.  Please share with the group.

Sincerely
